Crosby Eats Puck: Out Indefinitely
The Pittsburgh Penguins took the ice yesterday with high hopes and the fire to keep their winning streak going against the NY Islanders and then everything went scared in the first 87 seconds of the opening period.
Penguins’ captain Sidney Crosby took a Brooks Orpik slap shot to the face after it was redirected. Fans around the league watched Crosby be down for a few moments and then he skated off under his own power being accompanied by the team’s training staff.
Crosby was later transported to the hospital to repair his broken jaw. Sid the kid spent the night at the hospital and we are being told that he also lost a few teeth as well and the oral surgery was successful. The Penguins announced today that Crosby will be out indefinitely and even with the Penguins doing well this is a blow to the team.
The Penguins have a star-studded line-up; but, losing the leadership and passion that Crosby brings to the team could be devastating to this historic run. Crosby is also leading the league in points with 56, which is only 10 more points than Steven Stamkos. Crosby may not be worried about where he finishes in the league’s stats but other teams and players around the league look ready to pounce.
The Penguins’ next two games are Tuesday at home against the Buffalo Sabres and Wednesday on the road against the New York Rangers. The Penguins are two wins shy of tying the NHL record for consecutive wins, set by the 1992-93 Penguins. Can the Penguins break the record and cruise into the playoffs without Crosby?
